Scone Polo 11 – 8 Monterosso for the Hubert Perrodo Trophy & UAE Polo Team 13 – 10 UAE Polo Team ll for the Kerry Packer Trophy

The first Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi-Final featured a Scone Polo team led by father-son duo Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso against the only undefeated team in Monterosso on the Duke’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. Scoring the first six goals of the match, Scone Polo never looked back to win the match 11-8 victory and secure a place in Sunday’s final, writes Michael Foster.

Setting the tone in the first two chukkas, Scone Polo controlled possession and prevented Monterosso from generating any scoring chances to build a large lead. Perfect 7 for 7 penalty shooting led Scone Polo to victory, despite going without a field goal in the entire second half. Finishing with a game-high nine goals, Isidro Strada took advantage of each opportunity while an organised defence for Scone Polo held Monterosso Polo Team to just 25% shooting on 12 shot attempts. A determined Monterosso tried to mount a comeback in the second half, but four penalty conversions for Scone Polo sealed the outcome.

Scoring inside the first minute of the game, Scone Polo’s Adolfo Cambiaso worked the ball downfield with a deflected pass setting up Strada in front of goal for a quick 1-0 lead. Cambiaso continued to keep the ball attached to his mallet, placing an immense amount of pressure on Monterosso’s defence. Receiving two fouls, Cambiaso sent his team to the penalty line as both opportunities were converted by Strada, giving Scone Polo the 3-0 lead. Completing a dominant first chukka, Strada added his fourth goal leaving Monterosso facing a difficult task to close the gap. A delay of game in front of the Monterosso goal resulted in Scone Polo’s third penalty conversion, with Adolfo Cambiaso quickly following with a long pass to son Poroto to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Before the end of the half, Monterosso Polo Team found some momentum from the penalty line as Ignacio Toccalino converted two penalties, while David Stirling also scored from the field, but the result was a significant 7-3 difference at half-time in favour of Scone Polo.

Turning to a balanced attack that had been successful throughout the tournament, Monterosso Polo Team received goals from Toccalino and the team patron, with Mackenzie Weisz collecting the assist as they began to inch closer. A foul-ridden fifth chukka sent Toccalino to the penalty line twice more, converting both to suddenly bring Monterosso within just two goals entering the sixth chukka. Continuing their pressure, Monterosso shot at goal four times over the final minutes but were unable to find the mark. Despite being held to zero field goals in the second half, Scone Polo added penalty conversions from Cambiaso Snr and Strada to seal the 11-8 victory and book their place in the final.

Nathalie Perrodo presented David Paradice with the Perrodo Trophy, named after her late father Hubert Perrodo, patron of the Labegorce Polo Team. Labegorce were twice winners of the Queen’s Cup. Adolfo Cambiaso was named Most Valuable Player while his Lapa 07 received the Best Playing Pony prize.

The second semi-final of the Cartier Queen’s Cup featured a match-up between the two UAE Polo Team organisations, with a late charge over the final two chukkas securing the 13-10 victory for UAE Polo Team over UAE Polo Team II. HH Sheikha Maitha made a welcome return to the UAE Polo Team after watching earlier games from the sidelines due to injury.

An efficient game on both sides of the ball, UAE Polo Team produced twice as many shots at goal in what was ultimately the difference in the late stages of the game. Polito Pieres and Tomy Beresford combined for 12 of their team’s 13 goals, while consistently working to control possession. Winning 18 of the 26 throw-ins in the game, the extra possessions for UAE Polo Team paid dividends in what was a close match throughout. Lucas Monteverde Jr. produced another strong showing, leading UAE Polo Team II with five goals as part of an accurate attack that shot 78%, but they could not slow UAE Polo Team with a spot in the semi-final on the line in the 13-10 defeat.

The opening seconds of the game began with UAE Polo Team charging towards goal but were unable to convert any of their three shot attempts, opening the door for UAE Polo Team II to take the lead. A field goal from Monteverde Jr. and penalty conversion from Alfredo Cappella gave UAE Polo Team II a two-goal advantage, but UAE Polo Team stormed back, scoring four unanswered goals, two from the penalty line, to take their first lead. However, the score was brought back to even by the end of the second chukka as UAE Polo Team II continued to take advantage of each opportunity around goal. The pace increased before the end of the half, providing end-to-end action and few whistles in an exciting third chukka that produced five goals. UAE Polo Team II excelled with Cappella and Huidobro setting up Monteverde Jr. for two goals, while UAE Polo Team responded with individual runs from Pieres and Beresford that propelled them into the one-goal lead and set the scene for a tense final three chukkas.

After defeating Park Place in the quarter-finals, UAE Polo Team II was in search of their next victory and turned to their young two players at the front of the game. Receiving one goal each from Hugo Taylor and Monteverde Jr., UAE Polo Team II tied the game at 8-8, leaving two chukkas to determine the finalist to meet Scone Polo. Zero fouls were seen over the final two chukkas as the teams battled in open play and it was the additional scoring opportunities for UAE Polo Team that pushed them ahead. Beresford accounted for both UAE Polo Team goals in the fifth chukka, accurately receiving passes and finishing with confidence, but they turned to their 9-goaler, Pieres, in the final minutes to seal the victory. Scoring all three goals in the final chukka, Polito Pieres completed an impressive performance with eight goals, sending UAE Polo Team into the final, where they will meet Scone Polo for the prestigious Cartier Queen’s Cup.

UAE Polo Team received the Kerry Packer Trophy. This was given by Laurent Feniou, Managing Director Cartier UK, who was presenting the cup on behalf of Ros Packer. Lucas Monteverde Junior was named the Most Valuable Player and one of the horses he played in this game, El Overa Sensata, received the Best Playing Pony prize.

UAE Polo Team 10 – 9 Murus Sanctus – La Magdeleine & UAE Polo Team ll 12 – 11 Park Place

There will be a UAE Polo Team in the final of the 2021 Cartier Queen’s Cup tournament. Both of Sheikha’s Maitha’s teams won today to set themselves up for a UAE showdown in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

First up was the UAE Polo Team in a really close contest Murus Sanctus- La Magdeleine at the Zacara polo fields. These two great teams matched each other almost every step of the way. Murus Sanctus – La Magdeleine had a two-goal advantage (6-4) at the end of the third but everyone watching knew that the advantage could so easily change with this level of polo and all eight players delivering their very best polo. Facundo Sola, Sapo Caset and Matt Perry had all scored for Murus Sanctus – La Magdeleine, while Polito Pieres and Tomy Beresford fired through the goals for UAE Polo. They were again ably supported by Tomas Panelo, whose strong play throughout this match ensured the UAE Polo Team stayed in contention. Meanwhile Cata Lavinia, Sheikha Maitha’s sub who has impressed in this tournament, had met her match today in Max Voelker, substituting for patron Alexandre Garese. Strong marking kept them both away from the play. A good fourth chukka from UAE saw them take a two-goal lead going into the fifth (8-6), but the tension was mounting. Beresford got a yellow card in this chukka, while Sapo Caset sent a 40-yard penalty wide. So this was still anyone’s game going into the sixth chukka (9-7 to UAE); Caset levelled the score by converting two penalties, so on the second bell the scores were tied 9-9. Within 30 seconds of the start of the seventh chukka, UAE were awarded a penalty, which Polito Pieres converted to fire UAE Polo Team into the semi-finals.

The second game today, played at Les Lions, was tense and littered with penalties. The pressure undoubtedly was on Park Place, looking for their fourth consecutive Cartier Queen’s Cup Final. UAE Polo Team ll were the underdogs today, grabbing this quarter-final slot by winning last Wednesday’s penalty shoot out. That had been delivered by Alfredo Capella, who had been cool and calm under pressure. Today was no different, with Capella scoring the winner in the sixth chukka. The scores were six-all at half-time but Park Place got themselves a three-goal cushion at the end of the fourth (9-6) thanks to goals from Will Harper and Facundo Pieres. This was the moment one expected Park Place to power ahead to win this game, especially as UAE Polo Team ll failed to score in the fourth. This was not quite what happened although there was plenty of drama in the fifth. Lucas Monteverde scored from the first throw-in to bring UAE Polo ll back in contention only for Pieres to score two more goals. Then Monteverde Junior was shown two yellow cards in quick succession which saw him sent to the “sin bin” for a couple of minutes. Incredibly Park Place failed to take advantage of their opponents being a man down, while Capello successfully converted two penalties. So with score reading 11-8 to Park Place going into the sixth there was still all to play for. UAE Polo ll would have known that their stablemates had already qualified and maybe that was the secret ingredient. Park Place failed to score at all in the sixth while Capella fired two shots through the posts and assisted Monteverde in scoring too. This volley of goals brought UAE level once again. Then after the first bell Capella was awarded a 40-yard penalty. The player who had won his team their quarter-final place now fired though the winner to take UAE Polo ll into the semi-finals.

Monterosso 10 – 6 White Crane & Thai Polo 13 – 9 BP Polo

Monterosso confirmed their dominance in the league stages of the Cartier Queen’s Cup, the only team to remain unbeaten going into the weekend’s quarter-finals. Today they defeated Jasmine Calvert- Ansari’s White Crane (rec 2) 10-6 to put themselves at the top of League Three. Monterosso were in command of this game from the start and although Cubi Toccalino’s penalty taking was not quite as accurate as in previous matches he had still put his team ahead 5-2 at half-time. White Crane did not get themselves into this game until the fifth chukka, until then relying on their handicap advantage to give them a presence on the scoreboard. However in this penultimate chukka Nico Pieres converted two penalties, while James Harper and Andrew Blake Thomas fired through goals to take the score to 9-6 going into the final chukka. Suddenly White Crane, playing in their first Cartier Queen’s Cup competition were back in contention. It quickly changed back to Monterosso in control in the sixth, with Alessandro Bazzoni finding the flags for his team to confirm their supremacy.

The other game today featured Thai Polo and BP Polo who were just playing for team honour. Both squads already knew that they had been knocked out of the tournament. Thai Polo were in command of this game from the first whistle, they were 7-5 up at half-time and continued to push until the final chukka. There were some flashes of brilliance from James Beh and his son Joevy for BP Polo and some tight marking from all the team in the third stopped Thai Polo from scoring. Juan Martin Nero offered a lifeline for BP Polo when converting a couple of penalties in the fourth, so that they were just a goal adrift (8-7) going into the fifth. However a clutch of goals from Thai Polo in this chukka confirmed Thai’s dominance (12-8) and goals from Joevy Beh and Louis Hine in the sixth chukka was just an added kudos for both young players.

Penalty Shoot Out

At 5.30pm a penalty shoot out was held to confirm which teams would finish seventh and eighth in the league. It was a three-way contest between Alfredo Capella of UAE Polo ll, Barto Castagnola of Great Oaks LL and Nico Pieres of White Crane. Capella had his eye in and won the penalty shoot-out, confirming UAE Polo ll as seventh place finishers. There was then a sudden death situation which was won by Nico Pieres, confirming White Crane as the 8^th team.

King Power 12 – 3 Schockemohle & UAE Polo ll 8 – 7 Vikings

King Power had everything to lose today and so they came out fighting from the first chukka. Schockemohle were already out of the tournament but a loss for King Power could have seen them in a battle with other teams on a two-win/two-loss score. So today they made sure there was no doubt. Hilario Ulloa and Fran Elizalde scored all the goals – eight for Hilario and four for Fran. In fact their goal scoring was beautifully consistent – two through the flags every chukka. Schockemohle again delivered some brilliant individual play but could not translate that into team-work and goals. King Power have been impressive with their four-man polo, with Top Srivaddhanaprabha invariably up front ready to receive a pass and today was no exception. They were ahead 6-2 at half-time and just gradually added to that tally until the final whistle.

The second game was more of a surprise as Siri Evjemo-Nysveen’s Vikings team have been impressive in this competition, including an narrow win over Park Place last week. UAE Polo ll had secured only one win before the start of this match and so any betting people watching this game would have put their cash on the Vikings. Unfortunately the Vikings penalty taking was adrift today. Juan Martin Zubia, who has been known for his big hitting, straight shooting didn’t quite have his eye in today. He did go off the field twice for treatment and so maybe an injury was to blame. That said the Vikings kept a narrow lead until the fifth chukka. Here Alfredo Bigatti converted two penalties and a field goal to give UAE Polo ll a much needed 8-6 lead going into the sixth chukka. UAE then failed to score in this final chukka, but Vikings couldn’t swing this game back their way. Not only did UAE’s Hugo Taylor do a great job in defence but both Juan Martin and Sebastian Merlos sent penalties wide for the Vikings. Much of this was, no doubt, due to the pressure. This was a game the Vikings had to win. Juan Martin did find the flags with a minute remaining but there was no time left to push this game into extra time.

Scone Polo 10 – 7 Thai Polo NP & Monterosso 12 – 8 BP Polo

Scone Polo saw the welcome addition of their patron, David Paradice, to the team this afternoon, the first time he has played for Scone in this year’s competition. His return was a winning one as Scone Polo registered their third win, defeating Thai Polo NP 10-7, in their last league match of the tournament. Thai Polo NP really needed to win this one to keep their tournament hopes alive and Louis and Ned Hine did all they could to stop the Cambiaso duo playing any running polo. Thanks to the Hine brothers’ efforts Thai Polo kept Scone Polo in their sights for all six chukkas. That said, Scone Polo led from the first chukka (2-1) and never relinquished their lead. They delivered a team effort with goals from Cambiaso Senior, Junior and Isidro Strada.

Monterosso retained their unbeaten run – three games out of three – this afternoon to beat BP Polo 12-8. Winning this match on The Queen’s Ground ensured Alessandro Bazzoni headed home with the Richard Watt Cup too, named after a former Chairman of Guards Polo Club. Cubi Toccalino was again the star of the show for Monterosso, scoring nine of their 12 goals, six of them penalties. Similar to yesterday’s King Power match, Monterosso did the hard work in the early stages of this match, they were ahead 6-1 at the end of the second, to ensure victory later on. BP Polo upped their marking in the second half, which stopped Monterosso getting to goal with such regularity. The fifth saw Juan Martin Nero and James Beh add a clutch of goals to BP Polo’s tally which kept them in contention going into the sixth chukka (11-8 to Monterosso). This though was always Monterosso’s game and like Scone Polo earlier in the day, they were in control from the first chukka. Monterosso now have one league game left to play – the very last league match of the tournament – against White Crane on Wednesday afternoon.

Park Place 11 – 8 UAE Polo ll & King Power 16 – 10 Vikings

A change of line up for Park Place today as Andrey Borodin was unable to play and his place was taken by Sebastian Petragallo. Despite this change in personnel, Park Place went on to secure their third league win in this year’s tournament but had to remain focused against a defensive UAE Polo ll team. This was a back and forth game at Coworth Park that saw both teams level at half-time, 4-4. The game opened up a little more in the second half and Park Place found some air in the fifth when UAE Polo ll failed to score at all. However there was plenty of tension, with both Sebastian Petragallo and Jaime Huidobro being shown yellow cards in the fourth chukka. Two goals apiece in the sixth chukka ensured victory for Park Place but both teams delivered some good play and Hugo Taylor was particularly impressive in defence for UAE Polo ll. Park Place have now completed their league stages, winning three out of four games but will have to wait and see where they will finish heading into the quarter-finals.

King Power proved that starting strong pays off, beating the Vikings 16-10 on The Duke’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. They were 5-0 up at the end of the first thanks to goals and penalties from Fran Elizalde and Charles Cooney. By half-time King Power had cemented their dominance 11-3. The South African John Watson again subbed for Vikings patron Siri Evjemo-Nysveen in the second half of this match and the team gradually put themselves back into contention, offering some really strong team play. Juan Martin Zubia scored six goals in this second half but had mixed fortunes as he was also given a yellow card in the sixth. It should be noted too that despite leading from the first chukka King Power were taking no chances in this game and continued to push until the final whistle. Both teams have one league game each left to play and will be eager to go to next weekend’s quarter-finals with three league wins under their belts.

UAE ll Polo Team 13 – 9 Schockemohle & Vikings 14 – 13 Park Place

The UAE Polo Team ll secured their first win of the 2021 edition of the Cartier Queens Cup, defeating Schockemohle 13-9. The teams were all square (2-2) after the first chukka but the UAE team gradually pulled away. Hugo Taylor did a great job in defence for UAE and his hard work was reflected in the 13-6 scoreline at the end of the fourth chukka. Team-mate Alfredo Capella had dominated the scoring in the first half of this match, firing through six goals. Lucas Monteverde Junior took over in the fourth, adding three further goals to the three he had already scored in this game. With Jaime Huidobro joining in with a goal in the third this was very much a team effort from UAE ll. So it was a little surprising that they took their foot of the gas and did not score again in this match. Meanwhile Schockemohle carried on battling, with Jack Richardson and Patrick Maleitzke adding to their team’s tally in the final two chukkas, although it was not enough to alter the final outcome. Some great team-work from UAE Polo ll early on had reaped benefits for this team.

Siri Evjemo-Nysveen’s Vikings team’s win this afternoon is a fantastic example of playing until the very last minute of every game. This team were trailing Park Place from the second chukka until the sixth but never gave up hope. High-goal fortunes can always change in a moment but trailing 13-10 when the opposition includes Facundo Pieres and Juan Britos is definitely a big ask. Clearly Juan Martin Zubia had not read the form book as he was on fire today, scoring the majority of the Vikings’ goals, including all the goals scored in the final chukka. John Watson again deputised for Siri who is still battling an injury, swapping places at half-time, but the change in personnel did not alter the Vikings’ resolve. They believed in themselves and in their ponies and today it paid off.

Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club Honors Top Performing Players and Teams

24 April 2021, Dubai, UAE: The Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club hosted its first End of Season Polo Awards 2021 in Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Hotel and recognized the exemplary display of athleticism during its Polo Season from 2020 to 2021.

The Club‘s polo calendar comprised of 14 tournaments that started in October 2020 and had received the participation of players based locally and abroad with the support of its trusted sponsors and partners. It had seen new teams form throughout the season through collaborations and sponsorships in its games. The Club also witnessed its Polo Academy students advance in the Sport of Kings as they polished their skills in several Club Chukkers and Kids Polo matches.

The End of Season Polo Awards 2021 marked the culmination of the consistent performance of the team behind each polo event of the Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club. The evening attended by Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice Chairman and CEO of Habtoor Group with other key members of the polo community. The winners of the evening received gifts from Il Giardino Flowers Boutique, Baylandi House of Scarf, Majesticq, Equusir, Black Hound Sports Dubai and U.S. Polo Assn.

Defending Champion Habtoor Polo Tops the Dubai Cup 2021 Tournament

14 April 2021, Dubai, UAE: Habtoor Polo team claimed the last trophy of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series for the fourth year as it smashed the competition – Ankora/Dr. A Polo team and closed the game at 7 goals to 5.

Round robin games amongst AM Polo, Dubai IMMO and El Basha Polo teams kicked off the Subsidiary Match of the Dubai Cup 2021.

Match Progression:

El Basha Polo vs. Dubai IMMO:

Dubai IMMO vs. AM Polo:

AM Polo vs. El Basha: 2 – .5 | 4 – 3.5

Habtoor Polo team‘s performance throughout the final was consistent and had the early lead with 2 goals. Ankora/Dr. A Polo team on its tail, Ricardo Garros managed to match the goals delivered by its opponent by halftime. The final chukker had seen Aiti Garros threaten the impending win for Habtoor Polo as he levelled the game at 5 goals at mid chukker. Both teams raced for the win and Santiago Gomez Romero nicked the 6th goal for Habtoor Polo and with ample time on the clock, Ankora/Dr. A Polo attempted to tie the game once more. But Habtoor Al Habtoor broke through and delivered an excellent runaway goal that sealed the win for Habtoor Polo team.
