Sunday‘s Hallows Cup presented by Baylor Medicine Stratos Integrated Health, was the start of the last leg in the 10 Goal league and the kickoff to none other than the Texas Open tournament! Teams love to compete for the classic Texas Open spurs, and this Sunday‘s match did not disappoint.

Horsegate faced off against the 2019 reigning champs, Tonkawa, in what everyone knew was going to be a competitive match. Horsegate started the game with one goal on handicap, and teammates Toto Collardin and Shane Rice wasted no time to make it 3 to 0 early in the first chukker. After going down by 3, Tonkawa started to get the wheels turning,  as Nacho Baidiola scored his first two goals of the game, followed up by a goal from his teammate Mason Wroe. Teams were tied 3-3 at the end of first, foreshadowing what a great game this was to watch!

Horsegate held Tonkawa scoreless in the second chukker, as Tonkawa‘s Rice converted an open goal penalty giving his team a 4-3 lead going into the third. But the momentum switched in favor of Tonkawa for the third chukker, as Badiola scored 3 unanswered goals to give Tonkawa a 6 to 4 lead going into halftime.

As the teams took a halftime break, young spectators lined the red boards at the Virnau Sealy Tractor Kubota raced across the field scattering candy for the annual Halloween candy pick up! Princesses, power rangers, witches and ninja turtles sprinted onto the field after the whistle blew filling their bags with candy. Those not interested in the candy were able to look at the Land Rover Houston North vehicles and Bill Fick Ford Trucks on display. It was truly a halftime for everyone to enjoy!

Horsegate‘s Rice knew they had to start chipping away at the Tonkawa lead, and he did just that, converting 2 open goal penalties to tie the game. But it was Tonkawa‘s Jeff Hildebrand‘s turn to respond, scoring  on a run after receiving a pass from his teammate giving his team a 1 point lead. But again, Horsegate would not concede.  Collardin snuck one more goal between the posts to tie the game 7-7 going into the fifth chukker. Tonkawa regained their lead in the fifth chukker going up 10-7, which left Horsegate even more ready for the sixth chukker. Much to Horsegate‘s dismay, Wroe converted a penalty 4, giving Tonkawa a 11-7 lead early in the sixth, but what Tonkawa didn‘t know was that Horsegate‘s Collardin was on a mare named Turba! After Horsegate‘s Rice converted a penalty 2, Collardin and Turba scored 3 unanswered goals to tie the game forcing an overtime chukker!

With the crowd on the edge of their seats, the umpires threw the ball in to begin the sudden death overtime chukker. Horsegate managed to keep the offensive push towards their goal and were awarded a Safety 60 yard defended penalty shot. Unfortunately Collardin‘s shot was just over the post, so no goal was awarded, and Tonkawa got their first possession of overtime. Tonkawa began their offensive drive, but Horsgate was able to turn it around again midfield giving Collardin another chance to run at goal. Tonkawa‘s Wroe was able to beat Collardin to the ball connecting with a back shot to Badiola, who then carried the ball at a fast run towards the north goal. Badiola reached out to hit a neck shot goal to win, but it glanced off the post, and teammate Wroe was there to win the game with a back shot!  Both teams displayed amazing talent, setting the tone for the 2020 Texas Open! Final score: Tonakwa 12 over Horsegate 11. The days sponsor, Dr. Feldman with Baylor Medicine Stratos Integrated Health, was on the edge of his seat throughout the game, and was awaiting eagerly to hand out the trophies after the amazing finish!

Lewis Jewelers sponsored a beautiful Sunday afternoon 10 Goal game on the historic Farish Field at the Houston Polo Club. BTA 1/Tonkawa faced off against Horsegate 2/Kanthaka in what was a fun and exciting game to watch!

Horsegate 2/Kanthaka‘s Philipp Kampshoff broke the ice, converting an open goal penalty 2. However BTA 1/Tonkawa, already starting with one goal on the scoreboard due to handicap, was quick to respond with a great display of teamwork with a long pass from Nacho Badiola to Steve Krueger as Krueger received the pass on the nearside, scoring his team‘s first goal of the day. Horsegate 2/Kanthaka‘s big guns, Guille Usandizaga and Toto Collardin, kept their team on top with one goal a piece, ending the first chukker 3 to 2 in their team‘s favor.

The teams went goal for goal in the second and third chukkers. BTA 1/Tonkawa was up by one goal  with only minutes left in the third chukker, when Horsegate 2/Kanthaka‘s Kampshoff found his sixth gear, carrying the ball from beyond the midfield mark running by the defense and tying the score for halftime!

As the teams took a break from the excitement, Bill Fick Ford Trucks and Land Rover Houston North‘s Defender‘s drove onto the field to be on display while the crowd helped stomp divots and enjoyed the afternoon.

Soon the teams were ready for the second half. BTA 1/Tonkawa‘s Krueger and Badiola seemed to find their stride as they scored five goals between themselves to push their lead up to 12 in the sixth chukker. Horsegate 2/Kanthaka‘s Usandizaga scored one from the field, but it was the young Lance Stefanakis that kept his team in the game by converting two open goal penalty shots. Unfortunately for Horsegate 2/Kanthaka, time ran out before they were able to chip away more at the lead, as BTA1/Tonkawa took home the win 12-10.

1. Dawn Jones, 6
2. Danielle Lussi, 2
3. Tiffany Busch, 6
4. Clarissa Echezarreta, 6

Players’ bios:

#1 San Antonio, TX native Dawn Jones will be playing the number one position given her speedy and accurate skills going to goal. Dawn has been involved in polo since meeting her husband, Tommy Lee Jones, 24 years ago. She has won the Womenʼs U.S. Open twice, was once awarded the game MVP, she has played in the historic Argentine Womenʼs Open every year since 2017 and over the years won the co-ed Outback 14 goal league and played in the co-ed 26 goal 100 plus year U.S. Open. She is also a founding member of the Women’s International Polo Network (WIPN). When not playing polo, Dawn works as a production stills photographer in the motion picture industry. As a 27 year member of the International Cinematographers Guild, she provides on set and behind the scenes images for press kits and advertising promotions. When not on film location Dawn spends time with her husband on their ranch in San Saba, TX where she assists in organizing their wildlife management program, Brangus cow calf operation, and land management goals of removing non indigenous plants while preserving native biodiversity. Her ranch experience offers opportunities to share and learn with Texas’ top agronomists at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas where she serves as an advisory board member.

#2 Lake Placid, NY native, Danielle Lussi will be playing position number two given her skills and ability to disrupt the opposing teamplay. Danielle recently graduated from Harvard with a degree in Germanic Languages & Literatures. While studying at Harvard she began playing polo in her sophomore year and eventually represented the women’s varsity & mixed team in matches across the East Coast and abroad in China, Mongolia and Italy. After graduating she moved to London to work as Business Development & Partnerships Director for British Polo Day. Est. in 2009 BPD to create an invitation only global platform to promote British luxury brands in emerging and established markets, whilst building relationships with individuals from around the world. There have now been 78 BPD events in 16 countries spread over 5 continents and over $2.7 million has been raised for good causes. In her spare time she competes in co-ed and women’s specific polo around the globe. She began riding horses at a young age and developed her athletic competitiveness through ski jumping and flew over 97 meters in Lake Placid, NY, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.

#3 Vero Beach, FL native Tiffany Busch will be playing position number three requiring her to organize plays for her team. She will need to remain central to the team’s offence and defence, while remaining poised to establish set plays and look for passing opportunities to her team mates. Tiffany is a veteran of the game and was introduced to polo through her father, Peter Busch of Anheuser-Busch fame. She’s since grown to become an icon in women’s polo today. Tiffany rose to the top of the women’s rankings with fierce determination and natural talent. Supported by an ever growing string of horses, she brings her unique style and competitive spirit to the field in every game she plays. Tiffany currently works as a professional polo player and instructor at the Vero Beach Polo Club with an emphasis on cultivating youth polo for the future of polo in the USA. She also played in the 2017 Women’s Argentine Open and won the 2019 Women’s Texas Open for Team PoloGear.

#4 Middleburg, VA native, Clarissa Echezarreta will be playing position number four as our defensive back. This position requires anticipating how best to defend our goal with her well developed riding skills to ride off her opponents and hit strong back handers to her teammates. On offence she’ll need to patiently wait to snap up a loose ball, she can send forward to her teammates, while on attack. Clarissa was raised with horses and has ridden her entire life. Her riding skills are impeccable. She played polo in high school at Garrison Forest School and went on to play polo at the University of Virginia, where she won a National Championship. She’s an active advocate for women in polo by mentoring younger women players and she supports the WIPN with innovative ideas to enhance women’s polo. Clarissa has won numerous tournaments incl. the multiple Women’s Championship Tournaments and played in both the Women’s U.S. Open and the Women’s Argentine Open. In women’s polo Clarissa is one of the most respected position number four players in the world.

Preparation, Mentoring & Warm-up tournaments:

Team PGCC’s path to Houston has been one of dedication to support women’s polo and is spearheaded by Dawn Jones together with PoloGear’s very own Gary Fellers and Jeanette Sassoon. The prize they have their eyes on is the USPA Texas Women’s Open title. Strategically PGCC participated in two warm up tournaments, allowing preparations of some of the team’s horses, two of which were recently flown over from Argentina, whilst giving other promising players a chance to compete at the sharp end of the sport.

On August 28th a PGCC team competed in the Santa Ynez Sunny Hale Women’s Invitational lower flight 8-12 goal consolation finals. Zoe Cookson from Northampton, UK; Dawn Jones; 17-year old Taylor Olcott from San Luis Obispo, CA and Jenny Alter from Miami, FL defeated the very competitive JC Polo team to win 5-3. Many thanks to Megan and Memo Gracida and the entire La Herradura organization for hosting such a well planned women’s tournament in memory of the much beloved and respected Sunny Hale. Between September 4th – 6th a PGCC team participated in the prestigious 2nd Annual Women’s Pacific Coast Open at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, CA. The final day was an excellent day for USA women’s polo! Its success continues to develop and keeps drawing attention to women in polo.

For this tournament Team PGCC selected the following players: Santa Barbara native, Public Policy and Economics student Cory Williams, who together with team member Kendall Plank were title holders of the Cup in 2019; Licensed Texas attorney and horse welfare advocate Pamela Flanagan, who was 2019 Women’s U.S. Open Champion and recipient of the tournament’s Amateur MVP; Dawn Jones and the quartet was completed by Kendall Plank, who holds a degree in Leadership with minors in Business and Communications and is currently working for LC Design Studio to develop her business skills. Together with her mother, Susan Plank she founded and established Dec My Room, a non profit charity dedicated to enhancing the lives of pediatric cancer patients during their treatment and healing whilst hospitalized.

Despite giving their best efforts in the consolation finals, they were not able to convert for a win. All the players relished the chance to play at the women’s 20 goal level. The PoloGear Coffee Company banner served as an excellent learning experience to improve booth individually and as a team. As is typical with women’s polo all attended an exciting final in a show of support to their friends participating. Then two birthdays were celebrated for team Timing’s number 4, Sofia Lorenzo and our team mate, Kendall Plank.

It was a beautiful summer evening in Houston, Texas as the Houston Polo Club hosted two fast moving 6 goal games for the audience to enjoy.

In the first match up, Vintage Polo made quick work of the T Squared Energy/Specoil team. T Squared Energy/Specoil started with .5 on handicap and stayed ahead the first chukker up 1.5 to 1 over Vintage Polo. But after the first chukker it was all Vintage Polo. Each team member scored throughout the game, with Cody Ellis being the high scorer with 3 goals on the scoreboard. T Squared Energy/Specoil‘s Bryan Middleton never gave up, and pushed even in the last chukker, but Vintage Polo pulled away with a 6 to 2.5 win.

In the second match of the day, Horsegate Ranch faced Brown Bears/Whitehall Ranch. Brown Bears/Whitehall Ranch‘s Miguel Torres came out on fire as he scored two back to back goals, but Horsegate‘s Lance Stefanakis and Shane Rice kept their team in game with a goal apiece, ending the first chukker in Horsegate‘s favor 2.5 to 2. Over the second and third chukkers, Horsegate kept building on their lead with two goals from Rice and one from Anson Moore. As the teams entered the fourth and final chukker, Brown Bears/Whitehall Ranch‘s Bill Lane converted an open goal penalty 3, to bring his team within 1.5 goals, however Horsegate‘s straight shooter, Lance Stefanakis, scored an open  goal penalty 2 to finish off the game in favor of Horsegate 6.5 to 4.

What a beautiful opening Sunday at the Houston Polo Club! Four 6 Goal teams took to the field and put on quite a show for our first Sunday crowd.

The first game was between Bearsden/Tylee Farms versus Plank Companies/Sullivan Group. Bearsden/Tylee Farm‘s Francisco Rodriguez Mera dominated most of the game, showing off his talent using his smart game sense. His team maintained a lead throughout the game, and in the fourth chukker Mera stopped a goal attempt with an incredible nearside back shot, protecting his goal from Plank Companies/Sullivan Group‘s Nick Cifuni.  Mera‘s teammates took advantage of his back shot and made another offensive push towards their goal. Cifuni intercepted their push and once again was making a run towards his goal but as the clock ticked down with only ten seconds left, the horn sounded before he could score and the game ended in favor of Bearsden/Tylee Farms.

As the teams shook hands, the Virnau Sealy Tractor Kubota rolled onto the field filled with complimentary champagne thanks to American National Insurance.  As the divots were stomped, Land Rovers from Land Rover Houston Central were on display for the crowd to see, with also a bigger vehicle for livestock owners, a Bill Fick Ford F350 dually.  After the crowd had a chance to stretch their legs, the players for the second game began to warm up on the field.  The horn sounded, everyone returned to their seats, and it was time for the feature match!

Brown Bears/San Saba held on to a strong 2 goal lead for the first two chukkers against Pegasus/Propaganda. But in the second half, Pegasus/Propaganda stepped up to the plate. David Andras shot 2 for 2 on penalty shots, Paul Hobby, a normally defensive player, took advantage of a pass from teammate Mason Wroe and made a nearside goal from the field. Pegasus/Propaganda took a half goal lead after Andras‘s last penalty shot, and Wroe was dominating the last chukker on Best Playing Pony, June, as she displayed her ability to out turn and out bump the competition helping to score their team‘s last goal to give Pegasus/Propaganda a 1.5 goal lead. Brown Bears/San Saba‘s Ignacio Saenz converted a hard hit penalty 4 over the scoreboard with 1:30 left in the game.  Saenz had one last offensive run in the last 30 seconds, but unfortunately the ball went out of bounds, over the boards and the game ended with a Pegasus/Propaganda win.

At the first day of its new season, the Houston Polo Club hosted the 2019 Legation Cup Final between Texas and Great Britain. Charles Cadogan was the first to score of the game, successfully converting two open goal penalties to give Great Britain a 2 goal lead going into halftime.

The crowd walked the field at halftime, enjoying complementary champagne, stomping divots, and looking over the Ford Trucks from Bill Fick Ford, Land Rovers Land Rover Houston Central, and Porches from Porsche of West Houston that were on display. After the half-time festivities came to a close, the teams were back on the field, and the crowd watched in anticipation for what the second half would bring.

Bryan Middleton from team Texas, came out firing the third chukker, scoring three unanswered goals on the Best Playing Pony of the match, a chestnut mare named Max. The crowd cheered the Texas team on, as the fourth and final chukker began. Texas players Billy Mudra and Paul Hobby put a goal each on the board to extend their lead to 5 to 2 in the middle of the last chukker. However team Great Britain was not ready to throw in the towel just yet. Honorable Charles Cadogan converted a safety and Will Emerson found the goal from the field to bring their team within 1. The English had 30 seconds to tie the game from a knock in, but their play was interrupted by the Texas’ team solid defense effort and the clock ran out with Texas coming away with a 5 to 4 win over Great Britain.

Pip Cardnell from André Clouet was awarded most valuable player. Max, played by Bryan Middleton became Best Playing Pony.

2017 finalists Rocking P and first-time qualifiers Midland Polo Club met in the U.S. Open Women’s Polo Championship™ Final on Sunday, November 11, at Tonkawa in Brookshire, Texas. An uncharacteristic women’s week, significant rainfall led to the U.S. Open Women’s Handicap (played simultaneously) to be moved to the arena, while Open Championship games played on back-to-back days with remarkable upsets in preliminary play. The week was a whirlwind of unexpected activity and the superbly staffed and well-organized Houston Polo Club pulled off an outstanding tournament, each game bringing forth fast, competitive polo at the highest level. Hungry for a tournament win after losing in overtime to San Saba in 2017, Rocking P worked as a well-oiled machine to dominate the Women’s Open Final 10-2 after four chukkers of commanding play.

Both teams willing to lay it all on the line, players arrived to the field slightly over zealous, leading to fouls early in the first chukker. Rocking P’s Hazel Jackson quickly capitalized converting a penalty, followed closely by a field goal from teammate Lottie Lamacraft for an early lead. Midland Polo Club’s efforts to score fell short, resulting in a shutout first chukker. “We played the same team before and so wanted to come in underestimating them,” shared Jackson. “We saw them play against Nina [Clarkin] the other day and they were phenomenal. We watched back their games, and came in super prepared.” Midland Polo Club managed one goal in the remainder of the first half off the mallet of Tiamo Hudspeth*, but an unstoppable Jackson continued to shoot on goal, Rocking P leading the charge at halftime 4-1. Playing in the first half and splitting a man with her sister Courtney, 15-year-old Bridget Price, last year’s Handicap champion, remarked on her first Open experience, “it was definitely faster and so exciting to play. There was more man-to-man contact and it’s more open.”

Plays and strategies were discussed during the divot stomp and hungry for a comeback Midland Polo Club reorganized their team under the direction of coach Corky Linfoot. Izzy Parsons worked hard to create goal shot opportunities for her team, but Midland Polo Club struggled to hold back Rocking P’s Jackson, as she hammered in three consecutive shots. “We were playing some really clean, classic polo, going in pairs. That was really our game plan going in at the beginning, play a lot of defense so we could open up the field and let Hazel play her game,” shared Courtney Price. The gap widened, Midland Polo Club put up a solid fight until the bitter end, yet was unable to overtake the seasoned Rocking P team. Hudspeth managed one more goal for her team, a neckshot off grey mare Pringa before the final horn sounded, signaling Rocking P’s victory 10-2.

Rocking P’s Tiva Gross was happy with her first year of Women’s Open competition. “It’s a huge honor. I’ve been trying to come here for many years and to finally get a chance, and win, is an added bonus,” shared Gross after the game. “I had a great team, they made it an absolute pleasure, it was so fun. Some great opposition too, I don’t think the score really reflected how well they played.”

Hazel Jackson was awarded Most Valuable Player contributing seven of her team’s ten goals on the day. “I love the team I chose,” exclaimed Jackson. “Karl [Price] gave me the mission of finding our team and I am so pleased I chose these girls, they are massive team players, they always take one for each other and we’ve had a super fun week as well.”

Her third chukker chestnut mare Maxima, owned by Marcos Villanueva was presented with Professional Best Playing Pony. Amateur Best Playing Pony was presented to Emma, owned by the Price family and ridden by Courtney Price in the fourth chukker. “She was a little machine today,” commented Price. “She was giving it her all—we were flying.”
