U.S. Polo Assn.

Hosted by Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club (Carpinteria, California) for the second consecutive year, the 2021 Silver Cup® has returned to the west coast where six teams will contend for the prestigious title, including defending champions Lucchese. Located just five miles south of Santa Barbara and 60 miles north of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club overlooks the Pacific Ocean providing an attractive backdrop to an active polo calendar.

The first USPA Official Event of the 16-goal season, the Silver Cup® will begin on Sunday, July 25, with the final set for Sunday, August 8. The high-goal season will culminate with the Pacific Coast Open, the only open trophy on the west coast, August 13 through 29.

Serving as the Official Stadium & Apparel Sponsor, U.S. Polo Assn., the official brand of the United States Polo Association, will provide stadium branding and apparel for both high-profile west coast tournaments.

The Silver Cup® has been called many names throughout its illustrious 121-year history. Originally established as the Junior Championship, it was first played in 1900. In 1938, the Junior Championship was renamed the National Twenty Goal® Championship and in 1974 the tournament took its present name, the Silver Cup®. A trophy which bears the names of many Polo Hall of Famers including Tommy Hitchcock and Cecil Smith, the Silver Cup® also features Lucchese (2020, 2014, 2012) and Farmers & Merchants Bank (2016, 2015, 2013) with three titles each. Antelope is the only other team in the lineup who has qualified for the Silver Cup® Final.

On Antelope’s heels throughout the first half of the 2020 Silver Cup® Final, Lucchese turned the scoreboard around in the third, gradually extending the lead to secure the coveted trophy 15-11 for the first time in six years. In 2021 the defending champions will be joined by Keko Magrini on Lucchese’s roster, while 2020 Lucchese teammate Nico Escobar will compete with his family’s Santa Clara this year. Featuring father-and-son combinations on multiple teams, the 16-goal rosters feature a variety of young rising stars including several active and graduating Team USPA members and alumni.

An action-packed start to the third round of the 2020 USPA Gold Cup® featured three games, with upsets occurring in each game including Dutta Corp handing Las Monjitas their first loss of the season with an impressive 20-11 victory. Santa Clara defeated C.V. Whitney Cup finalist La Indiana 10-7, while Equuleus narrowly edged Coca-Cola 8-7 for their first victory of the tournament at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

The opening game featured a stunning performance from Dutta Corp, who produced the highest goal total of the season thus far with 20 goals against previously undefeated Las Monjitas. Dutta Corp was efficient from both the field and the penalty line, where they shot 86% and 80% respectively, in what provided to be a foul-ridden game with 29 fouls. Limiting Las Monjitas’ opportunities from the field, Dutta Corp completed the dominant 20-11 victory.

Eight fouls in the opening two chukkers from Las Monjitas resulted in five penalty goals for the duo of Facundo and Mariano Obregon as Dutta Corp raced out to a large lead. Conceding possessions, Las Monjitas was kept off the scoreboard, while Dutta Corp produced six goals, receiving at least one goal from each player for a quick 6-0 lead. After a penalty 2 conversion from Francisco Elizalde, Dutta Corp went on another goal run, scoring four unanswered goals, three from Mariano Obregon to finish the second chukker with a 10-1 lead. Playing at a lightning quick pace, Dutta Corp overwhelmed Las Monjitas across the entire field and took advantage of each opportunity to lead by 10 goals at halftime.

Entering the game as the lone undefeated team, Las Monjitas was stunned by Dutta Corp’s relentless attack that continued to extend their lead further. The umpire’s whistle slowed play in the second half as scoring turned to the penalty line, with Facundo Obregon adding two more penalty goals. Finishing the fourth chukker and still yet to score from the field, a frustrated Las Monjitas side were left facing an insurmountable 16-4 deficit with two chukkers remaining. Sitting back defensively over the final two chukkers, Dutta Corp finally conceded their first field goal to Bautista Panelo, who replaced an injured Mackenzie Weisz, but Dutta Corp cruised to the convincing 20-11 victory, improving to 3-0 in the tournament.

The second game of the day featured 2-0 La Indiana against 1-1 Santa Clara, but it was Santa Clara who controlled play throughout the match. Five goals each from Ignatius Du Plessis and Polito Pieres led their respective teams, but it was an organized defense from Santa Clara, holding La Indiana to 3 for 10 shooting from the field that proved to be the difference in the victory. Luis Escobar opened the scoring for Santa Clara, but a penalty 3 conversion from Pieres, along with a field goal from Jeff Hall gave La Indiana the early 2-1 lead. In one of the most decisive chukkers of the match, Santa Clara produced four goals in quick succession, led by two from Du Plessis and an impressive goal from Henry Porter to race into a 5-2 advantage on the scoreboard. Fouls from Santa Clara slowed their momentum to finish the half, but they maintained their three-goal lead heading into halftime.

Focused on making their comeback, La Indiana fought to create chances at goal, but Santa Clara’s strong defense made their shot attempts difficult. Converting just one of their first six shot attempts, La Indiana saw their deficit grow to four with Du Plessis pacing the Santa Clara attack. The duo of Pieres and Hall combined for three goals as La Indiana found their footing in the fifth chukker, pulling within two goals as excitement rose around the field in a potential comeback. A clutch penalty 4 conversion from Du Plessis to begin the final chukker gave Santa Clara a commanding three-goal lead, which they didn’t give up, capturing the 10-7 victory, matching La Indiana’s 2-1 record atop Bracket I.

The final game of the day on the U.S. Polo Assn. Field 1 displayed a defensive battle between Coca-Cola and Equuleus that came down to the final second on a penalty conversion from Mariano Gonzalez. Despite inaccurate shooting from the field and the penalty line, Equuleus outshot Coca-Cola 17-10, with the extra attempts leading them to the narrow victory. A back and forth start to the game resulted in the two teams trading goals, deadlocked at 2-2 after the first chukker. The duo of Inaki and Magoo Laprida combined for a three-goal run that gave Equuleus control of the game, but before the end of the half, Coca-Cola responded with back-to-back goals from Nico Pieres and Julian de Lusarreta.

Defense highlighted the second half of the feature game, leaving the teams within one goal of each other over the final three chukkers. Steve Krueger’s second goal of the game tied the score at 5-5, but scoring was hard to come by for the remainder of the game, with five of the final six goals coming from the penalty line. Penalty goals from Gonzalez and Pieres sent the outcome into the final chukker as spectators were treated to a close finish. Drawing a foul in the final seconds, Equuleus had a penalty 2 attempt for the victory as time was expiring and Gonzalez converted the chance, sending Equuleus to the thrilling 8-7 victory. Magoo Laprida captured MVP honors, while his mare „Nike“ was named the Best Playing Pony.

The USPA Gold Cup® – the second leg of the GAUNTLET OF POLO™, continues today, March 9 at 11:00 a.m. with Postage Stamp Farm vs. Daily Racing Form on field 5 and at 3:00 p.m. with Cessna vs. Patagones on field 3. The PPSG is very grateful to U.S. Polo Assn. our Title Sponsor for their financial support as well as their desire to help us take the event to the next level, similar to how they have taken their brands to ever increasing new levels.

This year‘s event saw Team Pilot Catastrophe Services close the gap on the rivalry with a hard fought 6-4 victory. Many people in the crowd including former 10 goal player, and PPSG supporter, Eduardo „Ruso“ Heguy said this was the hardest fought 40 goal game they remember.

Pelon Stirling won this years Tito‘s Handmade Vodka 2 Point Shot of the day award, a 40-Goal Polo Challenge fan favorite. Nico Pieres was voted the Jetcraft MVP, and the 5 Star Builders Best Playing Pony award went to Lavinia Coronacion, bred and owned by Carlos & Hilario Ulloa.

Prior to the 10 goal players taking the field, the Future 10‘s Match took place and featured the children of current and former 10 goal players as well as children of generous supporters of the PPSG. The Future 10‘s game players were extremely excited to be on the U.S. Polo Assn. field and in front of a crowd. They didn‘t disappoint, putting on a great show of up-and-coming talent.

Following the 40 goal game, over 400 people attended the dinner & auction which was co-sponsored by Mark Edward Partners and Keith & Michelle Whitman.

Highlights of the auction included, Curtis Pilot‘s winning bid of $70,000 for the horse cloning donated by the Crestview Group of Companies, Don & Carol Pennycook winning the island vacation retreat: Ilha do Japao, and Facundo Pieres‘ jersey raising $9,000 each from Lisa Falcone and the partnership of Mike Egan and Jim Kravitz. Facundo and the Pilot Catastrophe Services crew offered to play a practice with Liliana Falcone and Mike Egan while Jim Kravitz will photograph.

The biggest applause of the night went to Juli Ezcurra who auctioned his vest, and Curtis Pilot who bought it. Curtis very kindly gave Juli his vest back and gave Juli his Pilot team jacket.

U.S. Polo Assn. Announces Henry Porter, Professional Polo Player, as Global Brand Ambassador Focusing on United Kingdom, Europe & Middle East

U.S. Polo Assn., the official brand for the United States Polo Association (USPA), is proud to announce polo player Henry Porter as the newest member of its growing roster of global brand ambassadors.

The scope of Porter’s role as global brand ambassador is focused on the United Kingdom, broader Europe and the Middle East, where he grew up as a youth and continues to spend much of his time as a professional player. Porter will shine the spotlight on the dynamic crop of young polo players coming up through the ranks by posting regularly on social media about his activities and by fully engaging in media requests for interviews and campaigns. He’ll be outfitted in U.S. Polo Assn. jerseys, apparel and gear both on and off the polo field.

Now 20, Porter began riding horses at age 5 and has been playing polo since age 9. He recently won the Copa Presidente (20 goal) trophy in Argentina and will play for Santa Clara for the 2nd Annual GAUNTLET OF POLO™. Born in London, Porter had his first-ever polo lesson in Dubai with Martin Valent, who remains his manager today. He now commutes between homes in Florida and England.

“Ever since that first lesson 11 years ago, I fell in love with the sport and I‘m fortunate that my passion has become my career,” said Porter. “I’ve worked hard training for every opportunity I’ve had. One of my most memorable was playing the East Coast Open and winning the trophy,” Porter recalled.

With an extremely bright future ahead of him, Porter’s dream is to be a top-rated professional polo player by improving his handicap year over year. He has already competed at some of the largest polo games in the world, winning the “high goal” East Coast Open, the FIP World Cup Zone Final, the Mansion Cup, the Bronze Trophy at Sotogrande and the 50K National 12-Goal two years in a row. He also reached the final of the Ylisvakier Cup in the U.S. as well as has competed in the illustrious Westchester Cup and the prestigious GAUNTLET OF POLO™ Series held at the International Polo Club in South Florida.

“Having Henry represent U.S. Polo Assn. in some of our most important international markets on and off the field is a win-win. He is not only a tremendous young athlete who continues to get better each year but is one of the true gentlemen of the game,” said J. Michael Prince, President and CEO of USPA Global Licensing. “I have watched Henry play in games around the world that have included teaming up with Prince Harry in the King Power Royal Charity Cup to playing at the highest level in the United States at the U.S. Open Polo Championship®. We are excited to have him be part of our global ambassador lineup.”

When he’s not striving to advance his polo skills, Porter is studying business at the Repton School in Dubai, whose academic program is based on British National Curriculum and is accredited by the Cambridge and London University Exam Boards. Porter also stays active playing tennis and golf and he enjoys skiing.

“I’m really honored to have been chosen as a global brand ambassador for such an authentic sport-inspired brand like U.S. Polo Assn. that does so much for the sport and players,” said Henry. “I look forward to gaining great exposure with both the new and loyal fans and followers of the sport by sharing my fast-paced polo activities and my exciting travels.”
