Juan Martin Nero and Jeta Castagnola.

Richard Mille opened the first chukker with a 1-0 lead on handicap. Audi had two scoring opportunities early, missing a penalty conversion and having a goal nullified on a right-of-way penalty. MacDonough scored with 1:34 left for a 2-0 lead.

With Richard Mille controlling 80 percent of the throw-ins, Richard Mille outscored Audi, 2-1, in the third chukker for a 6-4 halftime lead.

Ganzi scored with 5:27 left to give Richard Mille a 7-4 advantage in the fourth chukker but the lead was shortlived. Three unanswered goals including Jeta Castagnola‘s goal with five seconds enabled Audi to tie the game 7-7 at the end of the chukker.

Audi‘s defense was relentless in the second half frustrating Richard Mille‘s offensive attack. By the end of the fifth chukker, Audi had ten knock-ins.

Audi and Richard Mille exchanged goals in the fifth chukker, the first by Marc Ganzi with 6:43 left for an 8-7 lead and the other by Nero with 2:35 remaining to end another chukker tied, 8-8.

The sixth chukker continued the defensive battle with great defensive goal stops and missed scoring opportunities by both teams. Jeta Castagnola opened the chukker with a 40-yard penalty conversion at the 7:22 mark for a 9-8 lead.

Audi saw its hopes of winning in regulation end when Grant Ganzi backhanded the ball which MacDonough then turned quickly to retrieve and put through the goal posts with five seconds remaining to send the game into overtime at 9-9.

Audi got balanced scoring from its lineup. In addition to Barto Castagnola‘s three goals, Jeta Castagnola scored a team-high four goals, Ganzi had two goals and De Narvaez added one.

WELLINGTON, Fla., February 5, 2022—Three members of reigning Argentine Open champion La Natividad highlight the team rosters for the highly-anticipated World Polo League‘s fourth season at Grand Champions Polo Club.

Ten-goaler Polito Pieres, the highest ranked American player, will make his World Polo League debut. La Natividad teammates and brothers Barto and Jeta Castagnola will also compete.

In its first final on the hallowed Palermo Field One, La Natividad won the 128th Argentine Open with a thrilling 15-13 victory to end the Adolfo Cambiaso-led La Dolfina Saudi Polo Team‘s eight-year reign.

Cambiaso‘s young nephews, Bartolome (Barto) and Camilo (Jeta) Castagnola combined for 12 goals and five assists including a perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the penalty line and never trailed in the game. Pieres was making his sixth appearance in the finals. Barto Castagnola was named MVP. All three were raised to 10 goals in Argentina.

The La Natividad players are expected to bring that same brand of excitement to the star-studded World Polo League competing on two different teams, Audi and Catamount, in the only 26-goal polo being played outside of Argentina.

In the late 1990s and early 2000, Scott Devon‘s Catamount was one of the sport‘s top teams featuring a pair of 10-goalers, Mike Azzaro and Carlos Gracida. In 2004, Catamount made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Open, narrowly missing the final with an overtime loss to White Birch. White Birch (2005), Audi (2009) and Alegria (2014) have all won U.S. Open titles and have hallowed traditions in polo.

In front of a good crowd and worldwide ChukkerTV audience, Audi (Sugar Erskine, Nic Roldan, Marc Ganzi, Brandon Phillips) defeated Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (Melissa Ganzi, Jason Crowder, Jeff Hall, Juan Bollini), 13-12, in overtime.

With the score tied 12-12 after regulation, Erskine lofted the ball from 45 yards out to score with 5:08 left for an exciting finish.

Roldan scored a game-high five goals, including three in the sixth chukker, and was named Most Valuable Player. Akiabava, owned by Santa Rita Polo Farm and played by Marc Ganzi was Best Playing Pony.

Since October 23rd Roldan had been plagued by a nagging left ankle sprain (sustained while hiking in Scottsdale, Ariz.) that had been hampering his playing until Wednesday.

MVP Nic Roldan of Audi goes for the big hit past Jason Crowder.

„It‘s good to be back on the field,“ Roldan said. „The ankle injury was nothing dramatic but a bit of a nuisance. Today was the first day I felt pretty good. I wouldn‘t say I was 100 percent but I felt good.“

In the evenly-matched fast-paced game, both teams had scoring opportunities to win in regulation.

Brandon Phillips of Audi pursues the ball with Jason Crowder defending.

The lead changed hands 15 times throughout the game with Audi leading by as many as three goals in the third chukker (7-4) and Seminole Casino Coconut Creek leading by two (10-8) in the fifth chukker and two in the sixth chukker (11-9).

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek had the first opportunity to score in the first minute of the game but was unable to capitalize. After Roldan was fouled with 5:15 left he hit a long ball from center field to Phillips who was called off by Erskine who had the clear shot and lofted it over defenders to clinch the game.

Jason Crowder of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek works the near side shot with Marc Ganzi defending.

„I thought it was really a great game to play,“ Roldan said. „It was open and very few fouls. I thought Seminole Casino had a better day. I think they deserved to win that game today. We got lucky in the end.

„We kept fighting. We just never gave up. They were tough and definitely made us work for that victory. With a little bit of luck and a good set play from midfield it was a good game. It was a fun game to play.“

WELLINGTON, Fla., November 1, 2021 — On a perfect day for polo, Zahedi Chogan won its first tournament in its fall season debut at Santa Rita Polo Farm.

In an exciting finish, Zahedi Chogan (Sy Zahedi, Jason Crowder, Brandon Phillips, Tommy Biddle) defeated La Indiana (Matthew Gonzalez, Marc Ganzi, Luis Escobar, Jeff Hall), 11-10, on Sunday to capture the Fall Plates final.

The veteran field leader Biddle, playing well on both ends of the field, was named Most Valuable Player. Biddle is among 2022 inductees to the Polo Hall of Fame. A Hall of Fame Induction ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 18 if conditions allow for social gatherings at the time.

Tommy Biddle of Zahedi Chogan works the ball off sideboards past defender Jeff Hall.

„I think MVP could have gone to anybody on our team today,“ Biddle said. „I‘m happy to be playing here with a bunch of good players. We‘re not difficult to play with, we all play simple polo. I‘m just happy we won.“

In one of the best finals in club history, the well-matched teams battled back and forth. Zahedi Chogan had a two-goal lead (5-3) going into the third chukker. After that, it was anybody‘s game with 6-6, 7-7 and 9-9 ties at the end of the third, fourth and fifth chukkers.

„I knew it was going to be tough because La Indiana played together last week and won,“ Biddle said. „We were a bit unlucky. When we gave up all those fouls it was because we kind of got sloppy defensively. They weren‘t beating us from the field, it was just the foul line. We were just making mistakes and they were capitalizing.“

Zahedi Chogan teammates Jason Crowder and Brandon Phillips work together.

The game‘s outcome came down to the final 4:52 minutes. Phillips gave Zahedi Chogan a 10-9 lead when he won the throw-in and raced downfield to score. Crowder then came up with a big defensive play stopping Escobar‘s goal run. With 3:51 left, Zahedi Chogan fouled giving Ganzi his seventh opportunity to convert an open-goal penalty, tying the game at 10-10.

With 2:41 on the clock, it was Phillips again fighting for possession on the endline. Biddle read the play well and forced a La Indiana blocking penalty. Phillips converted the 30-yard penalty to give his team an 11-10 lead.

In the final two minutes Crowder came up with two key defensive plays to stop scoring threats and Phillips ran out the clock.

„I am ecstatic,“ Sy Zahedi said. „It‘s such a pleasure to play with this caliber of players on both sides. La Indiana is such a phenomenal team. I kept telling my teammates a couple years ago when I started playing outdoor polo I could never dream of being on the same field with these guys. The chemistry and combination for us just worked.“

It was Zahedi Chogan‘s second tournament appearance this fall. They also competed in the Tackeria Invitational where they lost to La Indiana, 9-8, in the semifinal.

„I couldn‘t be more thrilled,“ said Zahedi, a former motocross racer. „This is a dream come true. I just want to play safe polo and contribute to my team.“

Tommy Biddle of Zahedi Chogan receives his MVP plaque from Georgette Escobar.

Zahedi, raised from minus-one to zero goals, has been playing outdoor polo for two years after trying arena polo. He was mentored by Hall of Famer and former 10-goaler Memo Gracida at La Herradura and was a natural.

„The main thing was to learn the game in a safe, controlled environment,“ Zahedi said. „It was trial by fire from four goals to eight goals and jumping to 12 goals very quickly. I had so much fun.“

Said Biddle, „He‘s doing well for a guy who has just gotten into the sport, he‘s doing great.“

Zahedi first played with Crowder at La Quinta in a four-goal tournament and continue to compete together at a higher level. Last month in Santa Barbara, Rancho Polo/Chogan won the Regional President‘s Cup Final with a 14-12 win over Klentner Ranch. Crowder was MVP with 10 goals. It was Crowder who convinced Zahedi to play at Grand Champions.

Newport‘s Gene Goldstein on his way to scoring one of his six goals as umpire Gaston Dorignac looks on.

„I‘m happiest with how much he‘s improved and how well he is playing, „ Crowder said. „I‘m super happy we won. We all had really good chemistry and everybody worked hard for each other. We got Sy down here and he has improved every game by leaps and bounds. He has accelerated his polo to the next level. He‘s got the right attitude and everything that makes a good polo player.“

Added Zahedi, „Everything Jason told me about Grand Champions was true. The fields are amazing, the people are amazing. The caliber of players I am so impressed with.“

The name of the team is the original Persian name for polo. In Iran the game is still referred to as Chogan.

Kris Kampsen of HL Polo breaks loose with the ball.

One of the most amazing moments of the game was Biddle‘s 150-yarder looking to score but bouncing off the goal post instead. „That wasn‘t the plan,“ Biddle said. „The plan was for it to go through.“

Zahedi Chogan got balanced scoring from its lineup. Phillips scored a team-high five goals, Biddle had three, Crowder had two and Zahedi added one.

Grant Ganzi of NetJets goes for the big hit downfield.

Ganzi led La Indiana with a game-high seven goals, all open-goal penalty conversions. Hall had two goals and Escobar had one.

In the semifinals, Zahedi Chogan advanced into the championship with a 9-8 victory over Newport and La Indiana defeated HL Polo, 13-11, in the four-team, single-elimination tournament.

Newport (Gene Goldstein, Juan Bollini, Sugar Erskine, Leo Mandelbaum) won the Fall Plates subsidiary with a 5-3 victory over NetJets (Larry Austin, Santos Bollini, Grant Ganzi, Nic Roldan/Pablo Spinacci) in the third and deciding round robin game.

In the other games, Newport edged HL Polo (Harry Landy, Kris Kampsen, Juancito Bollini, Santi Toccalino), 5-4, and NetJets and HL Polo tied 4-4 in the second game giving Newport a plus-one advantage going into the third and deciding game.

Nic Roldan of NetJets tries to control the ball.

Behind the one-two punch of Goldstein and Mandelbaum, Newport dominated most of the game, 2-0 and 3-1 for a 5-1 advantage going into the third and final chukker. With Newport leading, 4-0, Roldan left the game with an ailing ankle and was replaced by Spinacci. Goldstein led scoring with six goals. Ganzi had five goals.

Fall Plates was the third of five medium goal tournaments. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek won the season-opening Fall Classic and La Indiana won the Tackeria Invitational last weekend. On Sunday at Santa Rita Polo Farm, the final will be held at 10 a.m., followed by the subsidiary final round robin at 11:45 a.m. Both games will be live streamed worldwide by ChukkerTV.

In the exciting opening morning match, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek held off La Indiana to advance. The race is on between Juan Bollini of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and Peke Neutzet of La Indiana.

While La Indiana came within one goal four times in the last two chukkers, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek never trailed. Jeff Hall looked to score the tying goal with 11 seconds left in the game, but was called for a turning foul by umpire Gaston Dorignac. Crowder and Phillips combined for seven goals with Crowder scoring a team-high four goals. Hall scored a game-high five goals. „It‘s great to be back,“ Crowder said.

Later in the afternoon in a competitive three-team round robin, World Polo League, led by big-hitting Tommy Biddle, looked to be the team to beat. World Polo League pulled away for a 4-1 lead early in the second chukker. Biddle connected on a 150-yard goal in the opening chukker and 80-yard goal early in the second chukker.“I‘m really excited about being back at Grand Champions,“ Biddle said. „It‘s been a couple years since I‘ve played here and I‘m really looking forward to it with all these good players.“

Juancito Bollini of World Polo League goes for the neck shot.

Newport found its game in the third chukker, outscoring World Polo League, 4-2 including a 120-yarder by Roldan, but ran out of time with Roldan scoring the final goal with 29 seconds left. Roldan led scoring with five goals.

In the second game, Newport, fully warmed up, shut out NetJets, 1-0, in the second chukker and pulled away for a 4-2 lead. Goals by Erskine and Mandelbaum tied the game at 4-all. Roldan scored the game-winner with 33 seconds left. Goldstein and Roldan each had two goals. Erskine had a game-high three goals.

Grant Ganzi scores for Newport.

In the third and deciding game, World Polo League, after sitting out three chukkers, lost its momentum in a defensive battle. After a 1-1 opening chukker, Ganzi‘s penalty conversion gave NetJets a 2-1 lead. Spinacci and Biddle took turns scoring goals before Mandelbaum blocked a hardhit Biddle goal attempt and raced downfield to score with 20 seconds left for a 4-2 lead. NetJets continued its dominance in the final chukker pulling away for a 6-2 lead after Mandelbaum stole the ball and scored his fourth goal of the game.

The Fall Classic is the first of four medium tournaments. Four high goal tournaments are also scheduled for the fall. The highlight of the fall season is the Nov. 27 doubleheader with the Carlos Gracida Memorial Legends of Polo and International Cup. Sponsorship packages are available.

Tommy Biddle of World Polo League moves in to defend.

„The fall season gives American players who don‘t have a chance to go to Argentina an opportunity to improve their polo and keep them playing year-round,“ Bollini said. „It‘s a chance for players to see how good their green horses are and which ones make the cut.“

In the second chukker, Bollini found the goalposts twice, bringing Seminole Casino Coconut Creek within one before Roldan answered with a goal. A foul from Seminole Casino Coconut Creek gave Marc Ganzi the chance to convert a Penalty 3 and the chukker ended with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek trailing 6-3. In the third period, Bollini and Alejandro Novillo Astrada helped Seminole Casino Coconut Creek close in on Sorrento again, but Roldan swept the ball through in answer. The pentultimate chukker saw both teams battling ferociously to score, with Bollini putting the first ball through. Tito Gaudenzi and Roldan scored to take the total on the board up to 11-8 for Sorrento Polo Team , but Novillo Astrada came back with an answer and Grant Ganzi converted a Penalty 2. The final chukker began with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek still nipping at Sorrento Polo Team‘s heels. Bollini scored the equalizer and at 11-11, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek had victory within their grasp. An unlucky foul gave Marc Ganzi the chance to convert a Penalty 2, which won the game for Sorrento Polo Team 12-11.

While Barbaroso Leather started with one goal on the board, they were unable to get past Sebucan’s defense to score from the field in the first chukker. Goals from Sugar Erskine and Gene Goldstein ended the period 2-1 for Sebucan. Play was back and forth during the second chukker and Barbaroso had no better luck getting on goal, with another great shot from Erskine put Sebucan in the lead by 3-1. Pablo Pulido put a goal through the posts, and it was finally Leo Mandelbaum who was able to get a goal from the field on the board for Barbaroso. A goal from Goldstein ended the half with Sebucan in the lead by 5-2.

Both teams turned the power up a notch when they returned after the half. Leo Mandelbaum put the first ball through the posts, but Sebucan found themselves on an offensive streak, scoring four goals in a row. Barbaroso started to gain momentum in the fifth chukker, outscoring Sebucan for the first time. Spinacci and Mandelbaum both scored for Barbaroso, while Pulido was responsible for Sebucan’s only goal in the chukker. Barbaroso played a spectacular final chukker, keeping Sebucan off the board while Daniels, Mandelbaum and Spinacci were all able to put the ball through. Unfortunately for Barbaroso, they found their rhythm too late and went down to Sebucan by 10-9.

WELLINGTON, FL, May 22, 2021— Seminole Casino defeated Barbarosa Leather by 11-8 in the first match of the Pedro Morrison Memorial, while Sorrento Polo Team took down Sebucan in the second match of the day by a score of 8-7.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (Fran Spinacci, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, and Alejandro Novillo Astrada) met Barbarosa Leather (Leo Mandelbaum, Justin Daniels, Pablo Spinacci, and Juan Bollini) in the first match of the Pedro Morrison Memorial on Friday morning. Seminole Casino ceded one goal to Barbarosa Leather on handicap.

Justin Daniels knocked in the first goal of the day, but the combination of Alejandro Novillo Astrada and Juancito Bollini looked unstoppable in the second half of the period. Novillo Astrada took control of the ball and passed it to Juancito, who put it through the posts with a near side shot. Sixty seconds later he passed the ball to Juancito again, and Bollini fils took the ball through the posts in two shots. Seconds later Juancito gained control of the ball once more and left it behind for Novillo Astrada, who passed it back for Juancito to complete the hat trick for the chukker with 1:10 left on the clock. The period ended with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek leading 3-2. Barbarosa Leather struck back in the second chukker, working hard to keep Seminole Casino Coconut Creek off the goal. Leo Mandelbaum converted a Penalty 2, while Pablo Spinacci scored a pair of goals that had Bábaroso in the lead 5-3 at the end of the period. The tables turned in the third chukker, with Seminole Casino keeping Barbarosa Leather away from the posts while Novillo Astrada put the ball through. The half ended with Barbarosa Leather leading 5-4.

All eyes on the ball! Leo Mandelbaum is laser focused.

The fourth chukker demonstrated how evenly matched the teams were, with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek scoring first and Barbarosa Leather responding with an answer to maintain their one goal lead each time. Grant Ganzi scored the first equalizer early in the chukker, but Juan Bollini came back with a goal of his own less than a minute later. With 2:10 left on the clock, Juancito Bollini scored with a strong assist from young Fran Spinacci. Leo Mandelbaum found the posts with a spectacular angled shot, but with seven seconds left to play, Alejandro Novillo Astrada tapped the ball in to end the period with a 7-7 tie. Seminole Casino gained the upper hand in the fifth chukker, drawing ahead on a Penalty 3 conversion from Grant Ganzi and Novillo Astrada scoring to solidify the lead. Despite a well-placed shot on goal from Pablo Spinacci, Seminole Casino led 9-8 at the beginning of the final chukker. Barbarosa Leather lost the momentum they had enjoyed earlier, failing to get on the board, and goals from Fran Spinacci and Alejandro Novillo Astrada won the game for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek with a final score of 11-8.

In the second match of the day, Sebucan (Gene Goldstein, Pablo Pulido, Tomacho Pieres, and Sugar Erskine) took the field against Sorrento Polo Team (Federico Parker, Tito Gaudenzi, Marc Ganzi, and Nic Roldan). Secbucan ceded three goals to Sorrento on handicap.

Sebucan seized control of the field early in the first chukker and Gene Goldstein drew first blood with 5:43 on the clock. Nic Roldan fired a powerful shot downfield that was snatched off the doorstep by Sugar Erskine, but he blasted the ball through the posts in a similar shot on the next play at just under four minutes. Neither team was able to find the posts again and the period ended with Sorrento Polo Team leading by 4-1. Pablo Pulido and Marc Ganzi each put the ball through in the second chukker, which ended 5-2 in favor of Sorrento Polo Team. Goldstein put another goal on the board in the third chukker while a strong defense from Sebucan kept Sorrento from scoring. The half ended with Sorrento Polo Team in the lead by 5-3.

Sebucan‘s Tomacho Pieres ready to defend Sorrento Polo Team opponent Nic Roldan.

The fourth chukker played out much like the third, with Sorrento Polo Team still unable to make it past Sebucan to score. Tomacho Pieres put a goal on the board to narrow Sorrento Polo Team‘s lead to one goal at 5-4. The pentultimate chukker was Sorrento Polo Team‘s finest six-and-a-half minutes, as it was the only chukker in which they outscored Sebucan. It was Marc Ganzi they had to thank, as he converted a Penalty 2 and put the ball through from the field. Sugar Erskine held up the side for Sebucan, and the period ended with Sorrento Polo Team leading by 7-5.

Tito Gaudenzi rides off Sebucan‘s Pablo Pulido.

Erskine scored again in the sixth chukker and with two minutes on the clock Sebucan could see the win within their grasp. However, they failed to capitalize on the opportunity. With just five seconds remaining on the clock, a Penalty 6 safety saw Tomacho Pieres tie the score at the buzzer and send the game into overtime. In a sudden death seventh chukker, with 3:05 left on the clock, Nic Roldan capitalized on a broken play and took the ball to goal to win the day for Sorrento with a final score of 8-7.

The Final of the Pedro Morrison Memorial will take place on Sunday May 23 at 11:30 am. The subsidiary game, Just For The Fun Of It Cup will be at 10:00 am, where Sebucan will meet Barbarosa Leather. Both games will be streamed live on ChukkerTV.

Barely a minute later, Novillo Astrada scored again for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek to put them ahead by 7-3. Castagnola broke through the defense to score, but Figueras broke from the pack to find the posts again.

Juan Bollini watches Grant Ganzi‘s long shot

Going into the final chukker, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek was leading 8-4. Land Rover was the first to score, with an important goal from Castagnola in attempt to close the gap. Melissa Ganzi answered with a goal of her own, taking her team’s lead back to four goals. The match ended in a 9-6 win for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek to take the Beach Polo title. Each of the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek players scored three goals, while Barto Castagnola scored all of Land Rover’s four goals from the field or penalty line.

PTF remained on the field and were joined by challengers Give Back for Special Equestrians (ESPN commentator Tucan Pereya, Miami news anchor Louis Aguirre, and Beach Polo organizer Tito Gaudenzi). Pereya put the ball through the posts with a neat nearside shot, followed by a remarkable out-of-the-air goal from Louis Aguirre. Marlon Humphrey took a successful shot on goal to score – a great way to commemorate his first-ever polo match – but the clock ran out before PTF could score again and Give Back for Special Equestrians won 2-1. The jerseys worn by the players in the Celebrity Cup were to be signed and auctioned raising $23,000 divided among the three charities.

The first half of the match was a back-and-forth battle with a fair amount of shooting on goal to no result. Nic Roldan put the only goal on the board during the half, which ended with Italkraft leading 2-1 based on their handicap advantage. Roldan got down to work in the third chukker with a pair of back-to-back goals, while Italkraft continued to be frustrated in their efforts to score. In the final chukker, Govinda put the ball through on a Penalty 3 to tie the match up, but Marc Ganzi took the ball to goal to win the match for The Villa Collection/GFI by 4-3.
