WELLINGTON, FL, March 1, 2021— Santa Rita took down Richard Mille to win the $100,000 World Cup by 16-14.

Santa Rita (Paquito de Narvaez, Toro Ruiz, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, and Juan Martin Zubia) took on Richard Mille (Marc Ganzi, Jeta Castagnola, Poroto Cambiaso, and Lolo Castagnola). Santa Rita was rated 24 goals while Richard Mille fielded a 22 goal team to start the match with two goals on handicap.

Santa Rita got off to a roaring start at 35 seconds into play when Alejandro Novillo Astrada jumped out in front of Marc Ganzi to score the first goal of the day. A minute later Novillo Astrada found the goal with a nearside tail shot to end Richard Mille’s two-goal advantage. Ganzi converted a Penalty 2, putting Richard Mille back in the lead at 3, but Juan Martin Zubia and Toro Ruiz found the uprights to put Santa Rita back in the lead with 4. With 49 seconds left on the clock, Poroto Cambiaso swept the ball through the posts to end the first chukker at 4-all.

In the second chukker, Santa Rita started the scoring with a successful Penalty 3 conversion by Novillo Astrada, followed by an eye-popping 95-yard shot on goal by Juan Martin Zubia. Thirteen-year-old Paquito Narvaez picked up a pass from Novillo Astrada and slammed it home, putting Santa Rita in the lead by 7-4.  With 1:03 left on the clock, Santa Rita lost a challenge on an umpire call and Lolo Castagnola scored to end the chukker 7-5 with Santa Rita still in the lead.

Less than a minute into the third chukker, Juan Martin Zubia broke out in the lead and gained enough ground to check down and fire a shot on goal. Two minutes later Zubia made a slick near-side backshot to Novillo Astrada, who had anticipated the play and made a break downfield. He picked up the pass and ran to goal, putting Santa Rita up by 9-5. With 1:46 left on the clock, Jeta Castagnola picked the ball out of a crowd in front of the goal and put it through the posts. The chukker ended with Santa Rita in the lead by 9-6.

Alejandro Novillo Astrada scored the first goal of the second less than a minute into play, but Richard Mille was determined to fight back. Jeta Castagnola carried the ball downfield to score, cutting Santa Rita’s lead back to 3, but a Penalty 4 on a turning foul allowed Zubia to put another goal on the board. Jeta Castagnola converted a Penalty 2, but Toro Ruiz took a pass to the posts, bringing the score back to 12-8 for Santa Rita. With 1:50 left on the clock, Jeta Castagnola converted a Penalty 2, scratching away at Santa Rita’s lead. With only 48 seconds left to play, Paquito de Narvaez picked up a pass and made an impressive long shot on goal, taking Santa Rita up to 13-9 and belying his one-goal handicap.

The battle continued in the fifth chukker, with Richard Mille playing a hard defensive game. Santa Rita wasn’t able to score from the field but Juan Martin Zubia put two goals on the board with a Penalty 2 and a Penalty 4. At 1:49 Jeta Castagnola picked up a loose ball and took it through the uprights and converted on a Penalty 4 with just over a minute left on the clock. The chukker ended with Santa Rita leading 15-11.

Richard Mille continued its strong defense in the final chukker, and Santa Rita’s only goal came from a Penalty 2 conversion by Alejandro Novillo Astrada. Jeta Castagnola scored two goals from the field and one on a penalty to end the match with Santa Rita prevailing 16-14 to take home the $100k prize.

Juan Martin Zubia was named MVP, and his pony Matina, played in the third chukker, was awarded the American Polo Horse Association Best Playing Pony title. Millionaria, owned by Poroto Cambiaso and also played in the third chukker, was the Grand Champions Best Playing Pony. Notably, the $100k World Cup was 13-year-old Paquito de Narvaez’s first foray into high goal polo, a great start to what looks to be a promising career.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek 9 – Hawaii Polo Life 8

Despite a pitched battle and several shots on goal by both teams, neither Seminole Casino Coconut Creek nor Hawaii Polo Life succeeded in getting on the board in the first chukker. Within seconds of play in the second chukker, Jejo Taranco was able to take the ball to goal for Hawaii Polo Life. With 3:21 left in the second chukker, Taranco made a another shot on goal, which bounced off the post and rolled just over the line for his second goal of the day, bringing Hawaii Polo Life ahead 2-1. Alejandro Novillo Astrada was able to convert a penalty for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek at 1:14, tying the score 2-2.

In the third chukker, Poroto Cambiaso gained possession of a long shot ball from Nic Roldan to put another goal on the board for Hawaii Polo Life. A pair of fouls from Hawaii Polo Life allowed Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s Astrada to put two more goals on the board, and the half ended with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek in the lead by 4-3.

In the fourth chukker, Diego Cavanaugh and Poroto Cambiaso each found the uprights for Hawaii Polo Life, but they continued to foul, allowing Novillo Astrada to convert a penalty two and a penalty three to take back the lead. Both teams played a strong defense in the fifth chukker, and neither was able to score from the field. Poroto Cambiaso put the only goal of the chukker on the board with a penalty three.

The sixth chukker saw plenty of action with Poroto Cambiaso, Astrada and Roldan all scoreing bringing the score to 8-7. With 4 seconds left to play Poroto Cambiaso made a long shot to goal and tied the match sending the game into overtime.

Fifteen seconds into the overtime chukker, Diego Cavanaugh was called on a foul, which was challenged by Hawaii Polo Life. The challenge failed and Seminole Casino took a shot on a penalty six that went just wide. The winning shot came from Juan Martin Zubia, who converted on a penalty four, giving Seminole Casino Coconut Creek a 9-8 win over Hawaii Polo Life. Alejandro Novillo Astrada was the high scoring player of the day, with six goals.

Great Oaks 11 – Pampa Norte 10

Pampa Norte, with a team handicap of 21, started the match with three goals on the board. Great Oaks had a team handicap of 24.

Pampa Norte got off to a good start with Matias Zavaleta scoring the first goal of the day. Clemente Zavaleta, converted a penalty two to put Great Oaks on the board and the first chukker ended 4-1 for Pampa Norte.

Great Oaks dominated the second chukker putting 3 goals on the board leaving Pampa Norte unanswered resulting in a tie 4-4.

In the third chukker, Clemente Zavaleta was able to convert a penalty adding another goal for Great Oaks which was quickly answered by Santiago Loza keeping the score neck to neck. Play was back and forth with Torito Ruiz, Santiago Loza and Pedro Falebella all scoring for their teams, leaving the first half with Papa Norte leading 7-6.

Pampa Norte maintained their lead in the fourth chukker with a goal from Mattias Zavaleta, while Clemente converted a penalty two to keep the margin at one goal. Clemente dominated in the fifth chukker, scoring 3 goals.

In the last minute, Santigo Loza scored to narrow Great Oaks’ lead to 10-9. With 3:47 on the clock, Torito Ruiz picked up a pass from Nacho Novillo Astrada to put Great Oaks ahead 11-9. With just seconds remaining on the clock, Mattias Zavaleta scored the final goal of the match. Great Oaks defeated Pampa Norte by 11-10. WELLINGTON, FL, February 20, 2021— In the first match of the $100k World Cup, Casablanca defeated Hawaii Polo Life by 12-6.

Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Nic Roldan, and Barto Castagnola) faced off against Hawaii Polo Life (Chris Dawson, Peke Gonzalez, Diego Cavanaugh, and Jejo Taranco) on Grand Champions Polo Club Field 3 yesterday. With a team handicap of 24, Casablanca started the match with one goal on handicap.

From the first moment, play was intense with both teams going hard and fast. Peke Gonzalez scored the first goal of the day on a Penalty 2. Grant Ganzi completed a play with a goal on a pass from Juancito Bollini with 2:21 left in the chukker. The period ended with Casablanca leading 2-1.

In the second chukker Hawaii Polo Life pulled ahead by 4-2, with Peke Gonzalez scoring two goals and converting a Penalty 4. Their defense kept Casablanca off the board from the field, although Barto Castagnola sank a Penalty 2. The chukker ended 4-3 for Hawaii Polo Life. The half ended in a tie at 5-all, with both teams scoring only on penalty conversions.

The tide turned against Hawaii Polo Life in the fifth chukker, as Casablanca began to come together as a cohesive unit. At 3:51, Juancito Bollini got out in front of his pursuers to score. After more furious back and forth play with Casablanca’s defense keeping Hawaii Polo Life off the board, Nic Roldan slammed a 60-yard shot to Barto Castagnola, who took the ball to the posts. Despite a broken mallet, Juancito Bollini continued to do his part by taking out his man in pursuit. The chukker ended 7-5 with Casablanca in the lead.

With both teams playing aggressively, Casablanca’s only goals in the fifth chukker came on penalities as Barto Castagnola made impressive back-to-back shots on a Penalty 3 and Penalty 4. Hawaii Polo Life was unable to score and the chukker ended 9-5 with Casablanca in the lead.

In the final chukker Hawaii Polo Life continued to fight hard but put only one more goal on the board from a Penalty 2. Barto Castagnola converted yet another penalty on a difficult shot into the wind. Seconds later, Nic Roldan took the ball from the knock-in, passed it to Barto, then took it back to score with 3:22 remaining to play. Castagnola knocked in the final goal of the day, with Casablanca defeating Hawaii Polo Life 12-6. Barto Castagnola was the high scoring player of the day with 8 goals, while Peke Gonzalez scored all 6 of the goals for Hawaii Polo Life.

The single-elimination, winner-take-all tournament, is the richest prize purse offered in club history. Each player on the winning team receives $25,000 in prize money. The tournament features eight teams from 16 to 25 goal rating.

The 2017 inaugural champion was Palm Beach Illustrated, with players Jared Zenni, Santi Torres, Agustin Obregon and Tommy Collingwood. The tournament was resurrected by Grand Champions owner and president Melissa Ganzi. It was last played at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the 1990s.

What makes the Word Cup so unique is the fact it‘s open to teams 0-40 goal on handicap, similar to the Copa Republica in Argentina where teams of any handicap from 0-to-40 can compete. In 2017, the lowest rated team was Equuleus at four goals and highest ranked teams were Orchard Hill, Audi, Valiente and Flexjet at 26 goals. The 2017 tournament also featured 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso playing with his son Poroto in a U.S. tournament for the first time. This year Poroto is back playing for Richard Mille alongside his Uncle Lolo Castagnola and cousin Jeta Castagnola.

WELLINGTON, FL, February 15, 2021— Dundas defeated Dundas II by 11-9 on Sunday to capture the Limited Edition 12-Goal title.

Dundas (Sarah Magness, Hugo Taylor, Mariano Fassetta, and Robertito Zedda) faced off against Dundas II (Cable Magness, Juan Cruz Marcos, Geronimo Obregon, and Juan Martin Obregon) at Jan Pamela Farm yesterday in the Limited Edition 12-Goal final.

The road to the championship was slightly more complicated this year as La Portola, Dundas, and Dundas II were tied after the semifinal with two wins and one loss each. Following a shoot out, Dundas II and La Portola were set to meet on Sunday, but due to scheduling difficulties La Portola was forced to forfeit and cede their place to Dundas. With a team handicap of 12 compared to 13 for Dundas II, Dundas started the match with one goal on the board.

Play was open and fast from the beginning of the first chukker, with both teams playing above their handicaps. After two and a half minutes of solid running, Sarah Magness of Dundas converted a Penalty 2 for the first goal of the day. Juan Martin Obregon knocked in the first goal from the field for Dundas II, while Sarah followed up with another successful penalty shot to end the chukker with Dundas in the lead at 3-1.

Juan Martin Obregon took the ball to goal at the very beginning of the second chukker, and at the bowl-in Geronimo took control of the ball and, five lengths ahead of his nearest pursuer, made an easy hit between the posts. Juan Cruz Marcos put Dundas II into the lead after taking the ball to the goal on the near side. Sarah Magness tied it up with a Penalty 2 conversion, and Hugo Taylor tapped in a loose ball to put Dundas back in the lead by 1. Dundas was frustrated in the third chukker and couldn’t get on the board, while Geronimo Obregon scored to end the half with both teams tied at 5.

Dundas was awarded a goal on penalty at the beginning of the fourth chukker, and Sarah Magness followed up with another successful penalty shot, her fourth of the day. Hugo Taylor scored from the field, putting Dundas ahead 8-5. Juan Martin Obregon converted on a Penalty 4 with an impressively lofted shot to cut the lead to two goals.

With 5:15 left to play, Hugo Taylor picked up the loose ball and carried it through the posts to put Dundas in the lead 9-6. Another penalty conversion by Juan Martin Obregon and a big goal from Geronimo drew Dundas II into stricking distance with the chukker ending 9-8. Juan Martin Obregon tied the game at 9-9 early in the sixth chukker but the Dundas II defense wasn’t able to keep Dundas from scoring. Goals by Mariano Fassetta and Hugo Taylor sealed an 11-9 win for Dundas.

Robertito Zedda, controlling the game from the number four position, was the Most Valuable Player while Dolfina Secuaz, owned by J5 Equestrian and played by Zedda in the fifth chukker, was the Best Playing Pony.

WELLINGTON, FL, February 8, 2021— Scone defeated La Indiana by 14-13 to win the 2021 Sterling Cup title.

In what was undoubtedly the most exciting match of the 2021 Sterling Cup, Scone (David Paradice, Poroto Cambiaso, Peke Gonzalez, and Adolfo Cambiaso) faced off against La Indiana (Nico Escobar, Jeff Hall, Polito Pieres, and Milo Dorignac) at Grand Champions Polo Club on Sunday.

La Indiana’s Nico Escobar, who played an outstanding match, scored the first of his six goals for the day just 30 seconds into the first chukker. Slightly less than a minute later, Cambiaso baited young Escobar into a penalty and Peke Gonzalez converted on the Penalty 2 to put a goal on the board for Scone. Milo Dorignac retaliated with a goal that put his team into the lead. La Indiana played aggressively, keeping the pressure on Adolfo Cambiaso, and Escobar socred again at 1:53. Unfortunately, he followed up with another foul, allowing Peke Gonzalez to convert a Penalty 3. La Indiana ended the chukker up by 1 goal, at 3-2.

Gonzalez started the second chukker by converting a Penalty 2, tying the score at 3-3. Another foul by La Indiana gave him the chance to score on a Penalty 3, putting Scone in the lead at 3-4. While La Indiana was outplaying Scone from the field, overzealousness on their part was to their detriment, giving Scone a few too many opportunities to score from the penalty line. As the chukker progressed, Scone begain to win the throw-ins and take control of the field.

At just under 4 minutes, Adolfo Cambiaso sent the ball downfield to Poroto, who made a spectacular goal from 60 yards. Escobar scored La Indiana’s last goal in the chukker with two-and-a-half minutes left to play, but Scone completed their turnaround from the first chukker with another goal by Adolfo Cambiaso and a beautiful neck shot by Gonzalez with 55 seconds remaining on the clock. The chukker ended at 7-4 for Scone.

Early in the third chukker, La Indiana made the mistake of leaving the door open for Poroto, who made a strong run to the goal. Jeff Hall made one of his best plays of the day when he saw Adolfo coming for him and switched to the near side to score. With four minutes left in the chukker, Escobar saw an opportunity after the throw-in, signaling Polito Pieres for the pass and taking the ball to goal. Following another successful shot by Poroto, the two ten-goalers got into a sword fight near the boards that resulted in a Penalty 4 goal for Pieres and ended the half with Scone in the lead 9-7.

The fourth chukker began at a frenetic pace, and after two minutes of back-and-forth play Escobar finally found the goal. Poroto got a whistle for crossing the line, giving Pieres a chance to score on a Penalty 4, but the shot went wide just left of the post. With two minutes left on the board, Milo Dorignac demonstrated a textbook rideoff but missed an opportunity for a backhander, giving Cambiaso pére the opportunity to boost the score to 10-8. With 56 seconds left to play, Poroto capitalized on a mistake in front of the goal to end the chukker 11-8 for Scone.

Throughout the tournament, La Indiana has been a big scorer in the fifth chukker. They slowed the pace today and following a goal by Poroto early in the period, answered with only two goals of their own. With 2:23 left to play, Escobar scored his sixth and final goal of the day. At just 12 seconds left on the clock, Jeff Hall picked Cambiaso’s pocket and slammed the ball downfield to Pieres, who whalloped it through to end the pentultimate chukker at 12-10 with Scone still in the lead.

La Indiana was firing on all cylinders again, but nobody wants to go into the final chukker down by two to Cambiaso. Just over a minute into the final chukker, despite every possible effort by Nico Escobar to thwart him, Cambiaso found the goal in a striking demonstration of his preternatural abilities. Following a goal by Pieres, Milo Dorignac got the better of Peke Gonzalez to bring La Indiana within one goal of Scone, at 13-12.

With just under two minutes left, a series of missed opportunities by La Indiana left the ball in front of the goal, where Adolfo Cambiaso made quick work of it and put Scone up 14-12. Milking the clock, Cambiaso took the ball to the boards. Following a foul by David Paradice, Polito Pieres had the opportunity to convert a penalty, but it was cold comfort for La Indiana and Scone took the Sterling Cup title by 14-13.

Adolfo Cambiaso was named MVP, while Dolfina Paloma, owned by J5 and played by Adolfo Cambiaso in the third chukker, was named Best Playing Pony.

WELLINGTON, FL, February 2, 2021 – La Indiana defeated Casablanca by 14-10 on Friday while Scone scored a 13-9 victory over Santa Rita on Sunday.

La Indiana (Nico Escobar, Jeff Hall, Polito Pieres and Michael Bickford) met Casablanca (Hope Arellano, Grant Ganzi, Juan Martin Nero, and Juan Martin Zubia) at La Indiana Polo Farm on Friday afternoon as the action continued in the 22-goal Sterling Cup.

La Indiana was firing on all cylinders Friday, outscoring Casablanca in five of the six chukkers. They came out of the bowl-in aggressively, with Polito Pieres shooting on goal just 14 seconds into play. Casablanca dodged a bullet with the shot going just wide, and La Indiana missed several more opportunities to score by just a hair before Michael Bickford came through with the first goal of the day.

Casablanca finally got on the board in the second chukker with a successful Penalty 2 conversion by Juan Martin Zubia, but two goals by Polito Pieres and another by Nico Escobar ended the second chukker with La Indiana leading 4-1. In the third chukker, La Indiana had increased the lead to 7-1, when back-to-back goals by Hope Arellano narrowed the lead to 4. A final goal by Nico Escobar ended the half 8-3 for La Indiana.

Juan Martin Zubia was hard at it for Casablanca during the second half of the match, scoring two goals to La Indiana’s three to end the fourth chukker 10-5. In the fifth chukker play was more back and forth and Casablanca showed more mettle, with two goals by Escobar answered by Grant Ganzi and Zubia. In the final chukker, Michael Bickford put a final ball between the posts for La Indiana while Juan Martin Zubia poured on the steam to score three consecutive goals. It was an impressive final chukker for Casablanca, but La Indiana won the day 14-10.

On Sunday, Santa Rita (Riley Ganzi, Nic Roldan, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, and Juan Bollini) met Dundas Scone (Sarah Magness, Poroto Cambiaso, Peke Gonzalez, and Adolfo Cambiaso) on Santa Rita’s Field Three. Santa Rita, with a 20-goal team, started the match with two goals on handicap.

Santa Rita started on the right foot, with Nic Roldan picking Poroto Cambiaso’s pocket out of the bowl-in and taking the ball down field for a shot on goal that went just wide. Play continued with some aggressive back-and-forth action until Nic Roldan connected with a pass from Alejandro Novillo Astrada and found the goal with two minutes left in the chukker. The period ended 1-0 for Santa Rita, who had to enjoy the lead while they could.

Scone captain Adolfo Cambiaso clearly offered some inspirational words following the chukker, because the tables turned with a vengeance in the second period. Peke Gonzalez scored before the first minute was up, and around the five-minute mark Cambiaso péremade a spectacular 300-yard run to put his first goal of the day on the board. Peke put two more goals on the board, one on an elegant near-side neck shot, and Cambiaso filsscored the final goal of the chukker to end the second period 5-3 for Scone.

It was a tough chukker for Santa Rita, outscored 5-0, but any team facing the pitiless duo of Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso is in for an uphill battle. The third chukker saw more of the same, with two goals from Poroto and one from Gonzalez before Nic Roldan scored on a Penalty 5, ending the chukker 8-4 with Scone in the lead.

Two more goals from Poroto Cambiaso in the fourth chukker had Scone ahead by 10-4 when Nic Roldan poured on the steam to chip away at their lead. He scored two consecutive goals, ending the period with Scone ahead 10-6. Early in the fifth chukker, Roldan converted on a Penalty 2, and at 10-7 Santa Rita fans enjoyed some renewed hope. Unfortunately, the Cambiasos put paid to that optimism. With three minutes left in the chukker, Poroto found the goal with an impressive neck shot. With just over two minutes to go, Adolfo was about a length ahead of the pack when he snapped up the ball and made a run to goal.

In the final chukker, Poroto converted on a Penalty 4, racking up the last goal of the match for Scone. Astrada and Roldan each scored a goal, narrowing Scone’s victory to 13-9. Poroto Cambiaso was the high scoring player of the match, with 7 goals, while Roldan scored a total of six goals for Santa Rita. Riley Ganzi impressed by more than holding her own marking Adolfo Cambiaso, a notable achievement in her very first high goal match.

Nico Escobar successfully converted on a penalty two in early in the fourth chukker, followed by a goal from Pablo Spinacci to tie the score at 7-7. The second period proved to be no more successful for Great Oaks, who found themselves still shut out while Scone racked up another three goals, including a successful penalty 4 conversion by Cambiaso the Younger, and goals from Peke Gonzalez and Cambiaso the Elder. Peke Gonzalez converted on a penalty five, while Gonzalo Garcia del Rio found the posts for Great Oaks. At the beginning of the fifth chukker Scone was in the lead by 6-4. Adolfo Cambiaso, atypically leading his team from the back rather than the number one position, scored for Scone with Gonzalez following up with a successful conversion on a penalty three.

Dillon Bacon dodged traffic to score his team’s one goal for the chukker, while Peke Gonzalez knocked in another penalty shot to end the period 9-5 for Scone.
